PUERTO GALERA, Oriental Mindoro — Local officials in Puerto Galera have moved to place the entire municipality under a state of calamity as a prolonged dry spell continues to worsen water shortages in the popular tourist destination.
During the 23rd Regular Session of the Sangguniang Bayan on June 15, council members discussed several urgent concerns affecting the town, including the growing water crisis.
The session, held at the Bulwagan ng Mamamayan in the New Municipal Building in Barangay Balatero, was presided over by Vice Mayor Rocky D. Ilagan.
Among the measures presented was MDRRMC Resolution No. 005-2026, which recommends the declaration of a state of calamity across Puerto Galera due to the severe lack of water affecting residents and communities.
The Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (MDRRMC) also submitted Resolution No. 004-2026, which recommends the temporary suspension of water-related penalties to help ease the burden on consumers amid the ongoing shortage.
Local officials said the declaration would allow the municipal government to respond more effectively to the crisis and access resources needed to address the water supply problem.
Puerto Galera has been experiencing months of dry weather, resulting in critically low water levels and increasing concerns over the availability of water for households, businesses, and tourism-related establishments.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation as they explore measures to manage water resources and assist affected residents.
