The future has officially arrived in San Antonio.
Led by rising superstar Victor Wembanyama, the young and fearless San Antonio Spurs punched their ticket to the NBA Finals after defeating the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder, 111-103, in a hard-fought Game 7 of the Western Conference Finals.
Wembanyama, who was unanimously named Western Conference Finals MVP, delivered when it mattered most. The 22-year-old sensation finished the deciding game with 22 points and seven rebounds, capping off a dominant series in which he averaged 27.3 points, 10.9 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 1.4 steals, and 2.7 blocks.
Despite entering the series with a roster loaded with youth and limited playoff experience, the Spurs never looked overwhelmed by the moment. Instead, they played with the poise of a seasoned contender, knocking off the reigning champions on their home floor in one of the biggest games of the season.
Wembanyama was far from alone. Key contributions came from Devin Vassell, Julian Champagnie, Keldon Johnson, Dylan Harper, and Stephon Castle, while head coach Mitch Johnson guided the franchise through a remarkable turnaround much sooner than many expected.
“The players did what they’ve been doing all year,” Johnson said after the win. “They met the biggest moment in front of them, and there are some pretty cool memories I’ll take away from that.”
The victory sends San Antonio to its first NBA Finals appearance since 2014 and marks a new chapter for a franchise that spent six straight seasons watching the playoffs from home. It is also the Spurs’ first trip to the Finals without legendary coach Gregg Popovich on the sidelines and the first without franchise icon Tim Duncan on the roster.
Awaiting them in the championship round are the New York Knicks, setting up a Finals showdown that brings back memories of the teams' memorable title clash in 1999.
San Antonio’s breakthrough also guarantees that the NBA will crown a different champion for the eighth consecutive season, extending the longest streak of different title winners in league history.
For the Spurs, however, the focus is now on one thing: finishing the job.
