Pinoy Music Icon Heber Bartolome Dies At 73

Filipino folk music legend Heber Bartolome has passed away. He was 73.

Heber's brother Jesse Bartolome told SuperRadyo DzBB that the singer died on Monday night, November 15.

"Biglaan, masaya pa kami nung birthday niya eh... noong nakaraang Tuesday," he said.

Jesse also said that his brother had been suffering from prostate stones for more than a year prior to his death.

Heber founded Banyuhay, a “protest band” with the trademark sound of the kubing, a local musical instrument.

He was well-known for his progressive songs “Buhay Pinoy,” “Karaniwang Tao,” “Nena”, and “Tayo’y mga Pinoy,” among many others.

Heber graduated with a Fine Arts degree from the University of the Philippines and had a master’s degree in Philippine Literature.

He was a professor of Filipino Literature at De La Salle University from 1981 to 1984.

He exhibited artworks and fought for the rights of artists through the Filipino Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers Inc.

Actor Cesar Montano shared photos taken last November 9 during the celebration of Heber's birthday.

He captioned it, "RIP my friend, Prof. Heber Bartolome. My deepest condolences & prayers and love to his entire family."

He added, "Patuloy ka namin makakasama Ka Heber dala namin ang mga ginintuang awitin mo sa aming mga puso. Purihin ang Diyos sa langit sa iyong buhay na alaala."

Singer and composer Noel Cabangon wrote, “Paalam, Koyang Heber. Maraming salamat sa iyong mga mapagpalayang musika. Panalangin namin ang iyong mapayapang paghimlay."

"'Tayo’y mga Pinoy.' Salamat paalala at sa mga alaala Ka Heber Bartolome. Rest in peace," singer and songwriter Rannie Raymundo posted.
