Education Secretary Leonor Briones announced on Friday that the opening of classes will be moved from August 24 to October 5.

Briones said President Rodrigo Duterte issued a memorandum to move the opening of classes based on the DepEd recommendation submitted on August 6.

The DepEd recommendation included a policy analysis of the implications of modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ) in Metro Manila and in the provinces of Cavite, Bulacan, Laguna, and Rizal.

Briones noted that the learner population of NCR and Region IV-A make up a very significant part of the entire learner population in the country. Region IV-A has more than 4 million learners and NCR has more than 2 million.

She also said that DepEd will use the additional time provided by the new schedule to address the logistical limitations faced by teachers and staff in areas under MECQ.

Briones added that educational institutions in areas not under MECQ must continue orientations, dry runs, and the delivery of learning resources so that the country would be ready by October 5.

She reiterated that there will still be no face-to-face sessions when schools open, although sessions will not be limited to the online mode.

“This is because we have adopted a policy of blended learning wherein various modalities are being recommended, depending on the situation at the level of the region and of the school,” the secretary said.

Briones further said that they are finalizing arrangements for television programs, radio programs, modular systems, printed materials, and other modalities.

“We trust in the DepEd that this is the final adjustment of the school opening, even with the implementation of MECQ, we will use this time to make the necessary adjustments and ensure that all preparations have been made for the successful opening of classes for school year 2020 and 2021,“ the secretary added.
