President Rodrigo Duterte accused Vice President Leni Robredo of attempting to destroy the government with her recent statement that appeared to elicit disapproval from the public on the government’s COVID-19 response.

Duterte noted in a recorded speech that Robredo’s baseless accusations against the government will only create confusion among the people who have become desperate in these trying times.

“Please do not add fuel to the fire. You will just destroy [the] government. Huwag ninyo sirain ang gobyerno kasi masisira ang tao. ‘Pag nasisira ang gobyerno, lulutang tayo lahat. Maski na sabihin pa ninyo mamatay ako bukas, it cannot solve the problem of the country,” he said.

(Don’t destroy the government because you will only destroy the people. When the government is destroyed, we will all be lost. Even if you say I will die tomorrow, it cannot solve the problem of the country.)

Robredo addressed the public on social media Monday night, a few hours before Duterte met with his cabinet members in Davao City to discuss the government’s COVID-19 strategies. Duterte then addressed the public in a televised speech earlier today.

Robredo in her address took an apparent swipe at the administration by saying its COVID-19 response was to let the Filipino people do everything by themselves and encourage them to not expect anything from the government.

The vice president however clarified that she did not criticize the government, but only told the truth about what is happening on the ground.
