Former Senator Sonny Osmeña Passes Away at 86

Former Senator John Henry Osmeña passed away at 2:45 p.m. Monday in Cebu City. He was 86.

According to his sister, Annie Osmeña-Aboitiz, the former senator died in his condominium unit in Cebu City. He was immediately cremated.

Osmeña survived COVID-19 in July last year while also battling colon cancer and hypertension.

Born on January 17, 1936, Sonny, as Osmeña was nicknamed, was the grandson of former President Sergio Osmeña, brother of former Governor Lito Osmeña and cousin of former Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña. He served as a Cebu City Councilor in 1963 and as vice mayor in 1968. The following year he was elected as congressman of the city’s 2nd District.

Before serving as mayor of Toledo City from 2013 to 2019, he was a senator from 1971 to 1972, 1987 to 1995, and 1998 to 2004.
