Group Asks SC To Safeguard Human Rights Under Duterte Administration

A group of human rights activists have filed a petition asking the Supreme Court (SC) to institute judicial safeguards to protect the people against alleged abuses of the law under the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte.

The group led by Bayan secretary general Renato Reyes Jr. said they have submitted case summaries to the SC that highlight alleged ongoing human rights violations by the Duterte administration.

The signatories of the petition include Karapatan secretary general Cristina Palabay, KMU secretary general Jerome Adonis, KMP secretary general Danilo Ramos, ACT secretary general Raymund Basillo, COURAGE president Santiago Dasmarinas and Bayan Metro Manila chair Raymund Palatino.

Parents and relatives of alleged human rights victims also joined the petition.

“They asked the High Court to strengthen the writs of amparo and habeas data in light of the rampant red-tagging and terrorist-labelling being done to activists, journalists and other sectors on different media platforms,” the group said.

In their petition, the group highlighted at least three recommendations and reliefs they sought before the SC. They include the assessment of how courts have appreciated and ruled upon the discharge of the burden of proof by petitioners, and the temporary issuance of temporary protection orders (TPO).
