Bicol Medical Center doubles bed capacity for COVID-19 response

The Bicol Medical Center (BMC) recently increased its bed capacity from 500 to 1,000 as part of efforts to ramp up the region’s coronavirus response.

Senator Francis Pangilinan welcomed the development, saying, "this is a timely and welcome intervention, especially now that we are still battling a pandemic. Dalawampu't isang taon na na hindi nadagdagan ang bed capacity ng BMC. Ngayon, mas marami na tayong mga kababayan ang mase-serbisyuhan dahil sa bagong batas na ito (The hospital’s bed capacity never increased in the last 21 years. Now, more Filipinos will benefit from this)."

The hospital’s bed capacity was improved following Republic Act 11478, a new law doubling the bed capacity of Bicol Medical Center.

Pangilinan, who filed the Act as Senate Bill 640 in 2019, said the hospital had only 500 beds in 1998. However, the demand for care in the hospital rose to 850 per day last year.

The hospital is one of only two COVID-19 testing facilities in the Bicol Region certified by the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine.

As of July 9, Bicol Region has a total of 240 recorded cases, 154 of which are active cases.
