Authorities in Davao City warned Davaoeños living in areas prone to landslides and flooding to stay alert after the government weather agency announced that a weak La Niña may develop this month.

The Davao City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) said it has stepped up its alert system in barangays in danger zones and advised residents to be on their toes for pre-evacuation procedures when strong rains come.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) announced last week that, based on current conditions and model forecasts, a weak La Niña has a 50% chance of developing in late October or November 2020. The La Niña could last until the first quarter of 2021.

La Niña is characterized by higher precipitation (i.e., more storms and rains) in the western Pacific, including the Philippines.

CDRRMO chief Alfredo Baloran said heavy or above-normal rainfall and thunderstorms will affect flood- and landslide-prone areas in the city.

“We are actively informing the barangays, areas in Davao City that are directly affected by these hazards, labi na katong mga lugar nga flood-prone areas, and landslide areas (especially those in flood-prone areas, and landslide areas),” he said.

Baloran asked barangay officials to advise informal settlers in these areas to relocate early in order to avoid possible damages or loss of life.

“Kaning mga nagapuyo sa mga hazard prone areas, kanunay gyud ang peligro sa ilang kunabuhi diha. Maong ginahangyo nato sila na kung pwede, makapangita sila og laing lugar nga kapuy an para dili pud madistorbo ang ilang pagpuyo sa kanunay nga nay mga weather disturbances,” he said.

(The lives of residents in hazard-prone areas are always at risk. That is why we are asking them, if possible, look for other places to settle in so that they will not be constantly inconvenienced whenever there are weather disturbances.)
