Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief PGen. Guillermo Lorenzo T. Eleazar has apologized to teachers who were apparently offended by a tarpaulin that was put up in Sorsogon province as part of the information drive against sexual abuse.

The said tarpaulin, posted by the Sorsogon City Police Station and the Sorsogon City Advisory Council sometime in March this year, mentioned teachers among those who could possibly be involved in rape.

“While I fully understand that the intention of the information drive is noble, it is clearly discriminatory and insulting to our teachers who have been working hard especially in this time of pandemic and who have been serving as the second parents of our children,” Eleazar said.

“Sa aking panig, ako po ay personal na humihingi ng paumanhin sa ating mga guro at makakaasa kayo na itatama namin ang pagkakamaling ito. Magsilbing aral sana ang pangyayaring ito sa ating mga kapulisan na pag-isipang mabuti at maging sensitibo sa lahat ng programa na kanilang gagawin,” he added.

(I personally apologize to teachers and assure you that we will correct this mistake. This will be a lesson to the police to think carefully and be sensitive to others in the programs that they embark on)

Eleazar reminded all PNP personnel to thoroughly review the content of any tarpaulin, post in social media or other public message.

Meanwhile, Eleazar said the tarpaulins were already removed, based on a notice from Sorsogon Police Provincial Office Chief, PCol. Art Brual. The Sorsogon City Police Station made an apology as well, although the police officials will be made to explain their actions in a meeting with officials from the Department of Education and the Commission on Higher Education.

The PNP chief expressed hope that the incident would not adversely affect the ties between police officers and teachers.

“Ang mga guro ay matagal na naming kaagapay sa aming (Teachers have long been partners in our) peace and order advocacies and I sincerely hope that this lapse in judgment on the part of some of our personnel will not serve as a setback in our long-standing partnership towards a peaceful community and responsible citizenship,” Eleazar said.
