Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong has said that his administration continues to properly manage and maintain control over the city’s COVID-19 situation.

His statement followed the University of the Philippines (UP) OCTA Research Team’s tagging Baguio City as one of the areas in the country with the most risk when it comes to COVID-19 infection.

The research was based on the increased average of new cases recorded per day. The city saw a surge in cases last month, with slaughterhouse workers and police trainees among the latest cases.

Magalong however said there is no cause for panic as the situation was contained and all the city’s control systems remain strong and have high situational awareness.

“We know where the cases are and where the outbreak is happening,” the mayor said.

He said the city continues to have a high testing capacity of 16 percent.

“We have a total of 59,392 RT-PCR and 6,000 Antigen tests as against our population of 370,000. And of course the higher the number of tests, the more we are able to identify the cases,” he said.

“We are using data analytical tools to detect the cases. We are increasing our isolation facilities. We have a cooperative community and a very good team behind us. So over all, we have nothing to worry about. We remain on top of the situation,” he added.

As of October 26, the reported number of COVID-19 cases in Baguio was 1,931. Active cases numbered 568, deaths 25 and recoveries 1,338. (Liz Inigo)
