Magnitude 6.6 quake hits Masbate; retired police colonel killed

The Office of Civil Defense Bicol and other authorities are still determining the extent of damage caused by the magnitude 6.6 earthquake that hit Masbate this morning.

At least one person was reported killed and 25 others injured. Retired police colonel Gilbert Sauro was killed when a wall at his house in Sitio Alimango, Brgy Concepcion, Cataingan, Masbate collapsed.

The Masbate Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council also reported damage to more houses and other infrastructure such as the Cataingan Astrodome, which had been repurposed as a quarantine facility. Some parts of the astrodome’s ceiling fell to the ground. No one was hurt.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology warned of aftershocks. No tsunami alert was issued.

The earthquake was also felt at Intensity 4 in Mapanas, Northern Samar; Legazpi City, Albay; Lezo, Aklan; Intensity 3 in Iloilo City and Intensity 1 in President Roxas, Capiz.
