OCD-Bicol pegs initial quake damage at P23.96 million

The regional office of the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) in Bicol said the earthquake that jolted Masbate on Tuesday damaged roads, government buildings, and houses.

The OCD-Bicol, which conducted an aerial survey to check the areas affected by the magnitude 6.6 earthquake, said initial estimates put the damage at P23.96 million.

The temblor also damaged 19 school buildings and 61 houses.

The OCD said the affected families are now housed in an evacuation center in Cataingan.

The agency recorded one death and 48 injuries.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development said it will extend financial assistance to affected families--P10,000 burial assistance, medical assistance of up to P10,000, P3,000 cash assistance for families with partially damaged houses, and P5,000 for families with totally damaged houses.

A total of 128 aftershocks were recorded until Wednesday morning.
