The Talisay City contingent has backed out of this year’s Sinulog 2021 Festival over COVID-19 concerns.

“Though it was earlier announced that Talisay City will be part of this year's official contingents for the 2021 Sinulog Festival, the city has decided that our contingent will have to back out due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic,” said Talisay City Mayor Samsam Gullas in a Facebook post on Wednesday night.

The Police Regional Office Central Visayas earlier recommended to the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases that the Sinulog be canceled to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

While many of its events have been reduced, the festival will still include the grand parade and a dance showdown between the participating contingents. Minus Talisay, 11 contingents will be joining the festival on January 17, which has been allotted a P25-million budget.

Gullas hopes the Cebu City government, organizer of the Sinulog festivals, will understand their decision.

Cebu City South District Rep. Bebot Abellanosa lauded Gullas for his decision.

“The best decision you can ever make as chief executive, idol mayor Samsam. I salute you, you do really care for the welfare of your constituents,” the congressman said in a comment under the mayor’s post.

Cebu City Mayor Edgar Labella said the city will only cancel the festival once the IATF orders it.
