Pinay sambist Sydney Sy Tancontian has clinched the bronze medal finish at the World Sambo Championships held in Novi Sad, Serbia.

The 20-year old Davaoeña defeated Spain's Evadne Huecas, 2-1 in Womens Senior + 80kg.

"Proud po ako sa performance ko given na 'yung preparation ko po is limited lang due to the pandemic (I feel proud of my performance, considering the limitations from the pandemic)," Tancontian said.

Tancontian said the protocol at the said event was strict. “Nakabubble po kami so sa Arena and hotel lang po ang route namin everyday. Bawal po lumabas talaga (We were in a bubble. It was just hotel-to-arena and back. No excursions)."

This is Sydney's last time to play in the junior level and her fifth bronze medal since winning the 2018 in World Cup in Romania, 2019 in Moscow, Korea and Uzbekistan.

Sambo Secretary General and Sydney’s coach Paolo Tancontian shared the difficulty of the process they went through: "The hardest part Sydney has to embrace was playing inside the bubble without a coach beyond the mats who can have a greater view of their positions.”

After the Serbia tilt, she aims to participate in the Sambo World Cup in Moscow, Russia to be held this December 18-19.
