The Department of Foreign Affairs on Thursday said a Filipino seaman is so far the lone survivor of the sinking of a cargo ship during a recent typhoon near Japan.

The Panamanian-flagged Gulf Livestock 1 cargo ship and its crew of 43 were ferrying some 5,800 cows when it issued a distress call early Wednesday from a position 185 kilometres (115 miles) west of Japan's Amami Oshima island.

The 45 year-old survivor said one of the ship's engines stalled. A big wave then overturned the ship, causing it to sink.

The survivor said he put on a life jacket and jumped into the sea following a warning announcement on the ship. He saw no other crew members up to the time he was rescued by the Japanese Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard deployed three vessels, five planes and specially trained divers to search for the ship and other possible survivors. The service will launch a second search mission before another storm arrives.

No details were given on when and where the ship sank.

Still missing are 38 Filipinos, two New Zealanders and two Australians.

The DFA Office of the Undersecretary for Migrant Workers' Affairs and the Philippine Overseas Labor Office in Osaka are closely coordinating with local manpower agency Korpil Ship Management and Manning Corporation, which handled the Filipino seafarers’ employment.
