The state-run United Coconut Planters Bank said it is working closely with law enforcement agencies and the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas to probe the reported cyber heist last June that cost it P167 million.

The bank assured its stakeholders that clients' funds were not affected by the incident and that security measures have since been implemented to avoid its recurrence.

“UCPB remains a strong and profitable institution, registering a net income of P2.9 billion for the first half of 2020,” the bank said.

Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Governor Benjamin Diokno said the BSP was well aware of the UCPB incident and has been in close coordination with the bank since the early part of its investigation.

“UCPB is undertaking the necessary remedial measures to heighten cybersecurity, including collaborating with the NBI [National Bureau of Investigation] for the investigation and eventual prosecution of the suspected criminals,” Diokno said.

He echoed the bank’s assurance that UCPB account holders suffered no financial losses or damages from this incident.

Earlier reports said the June incident involved withdrawals from automated teller machines and online transfers perpetrated by African nationals and their Filipino accomplices.
