More OFWs hurt in deadly Beirut explosions

A general view shows the damaged grain silos of Beirut's harbour and its surroundings on August 5, 2020, one day after a powerful twin explosion tore through Lebanon's capital, resulting from the ignition of a huge depot of ammonium nitrate at the city's main port. Rescuers searched for survivors in Beirut after a cataclysmic explosion at the port sowed devastation across entire neighbourhoods, killing more than 100 people, wounding thousands and plunging Lebanon deeper into crisis. The blast, which appeared to have been caused by a fire igniting 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate left unsecured in a warehouse, was felt as far away as Cyprus, some 150 miles (240 kilometres) to the northwest. The Philippine Embassy in Beirut found that more Filipinos were wounded in the Beirut Port explosions that have killed over 100 people.

Foreign Affairs Secretary Brigido Dulay said in a social media post that the latest tally of affected overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in Beirut includes 24 injured Filipinos.

Dulay added that the wounded suffered only minor injuries, except for one who is in critical condition.

The death toll among Filipinos stands at two and one remains missing, he added.

Initially, 12 OFWs were reported missing after the blasts. Of the number, 11 are seafarers while the other is a household service worker.

The Foreign Affairs department on Wednesday night reported that all of the missing seafarers were found to be safe. The department also assured that it would continue to monitor the conditions of the seafarers and other Filipinos who were reportedly hospitalized.
